Our Projects

Here are some of our current and recently completed projects.

Emissions from residential wood heating is one of the largest sources of particulate matter in the Northeast states. States in the region are providing incentives for the introduction of cleaner wood burning technologies. Accurately assessing emissions from these new technologies is important and it is unclear whether current test methods are sufficient. NESCAUM, with funding from NYSERDA, is working with Brookhaven National Laboratory to develop the next generation of assessment methods knows as integrated duty cycle test (IDC) methods that incorporate robust emissions measurements and realistic operational protocols to improve testing accuracy.

To investigate the evolving nature of ozone formation and transport in the NYC region and downwind, NESCAUM has launched the Long Island Sound Tropospheric Ozone Study (LISTOS). LISTOS involves a large group of researchers with state and federal agencies and academia that bring a diverse set of resources, expertise, and instrumentation skills. These encompass satellite, aircraft, balloon (ozone sondes), marine, and ground-based data collection and analysis methods to probe the New York City pollution plume and its evolution over and around Long Island Sound. Initial aircraft studies began in May 2017, with expanded activities and planning efforts during 2018 and beyond.

Provide ongoing policy and technical support for state efforts to reduce emissions from mobile sources using advanced technologies for motor vehicles, including states’ adoption and implementation of the California low emission vehicle program.

Coordinate and facilitate the work of the ZEV Task Force created by the October 2013 Governors’ ZEV MOU. Current focus is implementing the Multi-State ZEV Action Plan for 2018-2021.

Convened a multi-state Permit Streamlining Workgroup to identify emerging issues and recommendations related to permitting DC fast charging stations.
Developed materials, including a white paper, to help states and others initiate conversations with local permitting authorities.

Worked with Northeast states to build consensus and develop “Model State Grant and Procurement Contract Provisions for Public EV Charging” related to making EV charging more consumer friendly (e.g., open access, payment options, pricing transparency, and uptime).

Formed a public-private partnership between the Northeast states and automakers to develop and activate an EV awareness campaign called Drive Change. Drive Electric.
Launched a new campaign program, Destination Electric, that uses a badging system to designate local “EV friendly” businesses and attractions located near public charging stations.

Support a workgroup of dealership associations and states to identify ways of supporting dealerships to sell more electric vehicles.
Held a webinar that featured three leading EV dealerships talking about effective sales strategies, which are summarized in What It Takes To Sell Electric Vehicles.

Work with the Auto Alliance and Global Automakers to organize and hold monthly calls and an annual in-person meeting of the “Collaboration for ZEV Success,” a partnership between major automakers and the ZEV states to share information and work together to promote ZEV technologies.

Organized a series of informational webinars on fuel cell electric vehicles and deploying hydrogen fueling infrastructure.
